Buffy Summers moves to Sunnydale after getting kicked out of her high school in Los Angeles. Although she is the Slayer, she vows to stay out of trouble, which means leaving her slaying behind, however she finds that to be difficult now that she's living on a Hellmouth and the vampires in town are preparing for the Harvest to bring their Master to power. Buffy also meets her classmates, Willow, the nerd, Xander, the funny guy, and Cordelia, the popular rich-bitch. Buffy also meets the school librarian, who happens to be her Watcher, and a mysterious stranger who calls himself "a friend." Willow and Xander quickly learn Buffy's secret identity when she has to save Willow from a gang of vampires.

Buffy tries out for cheerleading and meets Amy Madison, an old friend of Willow's who is desperate to follow in her champion cheerleader mother's footsteps. First Amber, a star auditioner, spontaneously combusts during her audition, and then Cordelia, who has just made the team, goes mysteriously blind. After another cheerleader completely loses her mouth, Willow and Buffy think Amy is practicing witchcraft, but it soon becomes clear that it's actually Amy's mother, Catherine, who is doing these terrible things, and she has possessed Amy's body to relive her youth. Buffy, who is now on the team, becomes Catherine's next target, and suffers from drunk-like symptoms which leave her sick and ailing. With help from Amy in Catherine's body, Giles breaks the spells, and Buffy recovers from her ailment just in time to fight Catherine. With the help of a mirror, Buffy uses Catherine's own power against her, and Catherine becomes banished to inside her own cheerleading trophy.

Angel warns Buffy about a vampire with a metal claw hand and Xander is jealous of Buffy's mysterious "friend." The gang's biology teacher disappears and is replaced by a sexy female substitute. When Cordelia finds their biology teacher in the cafeteria refrigerator, Buffy tries to figure out what's going on. It turns out that the new teacher is actually an over-sized Preying Mantis and is seducing boys from the high school to fertilize her eggs only to dispose of her mates the way that only Preying Mantises can. Buffy, Willow and Giles save Xander from the sexy new teacher just in time.

#5 Never Kill A Boy on the First Date: Aired Monday, March 31, 1997

Buffy tries to balance a social-life, namely dating a cute brooder named Owen, with her slaying duties. Giles reads up on a prophecy about the coming of the "anointed one" that seems to be coming true, and almost gets himself killed investigating it while Buffy is on a date. Buffy's date turns into a disaster when she has to rescue Giles and slay the anointed one. Buffy ends up dumping her cute boy when he gets excited about her life of danger.
